CAPABLE, currently used in 22 cities in 11 states and Australia, is a research-based intervention that helps increase strength, mobility, and safety of older adults through home visits from a nurse, occupational therapist, and handyman. The program lets patients set their own functional goals, like bathing or walking to church, while improving their living environment through renovations like installing hand rails or lowering shelves. It has been shown to decrease disability and depression, improve self-care among participants, and provide a tenfold return on investment. More info: CAPABLE program info

Livable Communities Report
n4a, which is the national organization that represents the Area Agencies on Aging, has recently published a wonderful report on what communities around the nation are doing to improve their livability. The author of this report, Stephanie Firestone, is a Montgomery County resident and attended the May 12, 2015, Villages Gathering. Loan Closet, operated by the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department
The KVFD has a very small loan closet that is open 1 hour per week. They take donated items and loan them to people who call 301-929-8000 needing such things. Examples include walkers and other mobility assistance devices. They asked that we not list anybody's name but just list the non-emergency # above; the person who answers the phone can help arrange the pick-up. Hospice Caring free services
Hospice Caring provides non-medical support services, without charge, to Montgomery County adults and children facing a life-threatening illness or grieving the death of a loved one http://www.hospicecaring.org.
